When you think of Brazil, what do you think of first? Soccer? Maybe the Amazon river? What about Journalism?

Viviene Martinelli, a senior journalism major here at Southern Adventist University, has plans to take the journalism field by storm. So consider this article a behind the scenes look at a future journalist superstar.
Viviene was born and raised in Brazil. Her father a pastor, she grew up moving from place to place, meeting new people every time. When she was eight years old, her family move to Andrews University in Berrien Springs, Mich. It was there that she learned English, and started absorbing some of the American culture, before moving back to Brazil a couple of years later.

Background

While she did not like moving so often growing up, she did see the advantages in it.
“To be honest, I hated moving around, more than anything, I didn’t like it at all. It was hard to make friends. I guess naturally I have a hard time making friends, and it seemed like just when I was starting to form close friends, it was time to move again. But at the same time, moving around I met a lot of different people, and I gained more experience living in two different countries,” said Martinelli.

She soon was able to add a third country to that list. When she was 15, her family moved to Maryland. She graduated high school and was attending a local community college. Yet her love for the Italian language soon convinced her to spend a year studying abroad in Italy.

After returning from Italy, she decided to come to Southern to study Journalism. With writing one of her passions, it was a natural fit.

“I enjoy writing because of my Dad, it’s not his career by any means, but he does have a knack for writing. So i think he is the one that inspired me. But since I was in 8th grade I think, I had already decided that I wanted to major in journalism,” said Martinelli.
Writing and journalism are not the only activities she enjoys however. Martinelli is also very involved in various clubs and sports at Southern.

“I am really into all kinds of sports, although I am not particularly good at any of them, I still like to try. My favorite sport is Soccer. I used to be good at offense, but then I broke my foot, so I had to find another position that I could play and injure myself less. So I became the goalie.”
Other than sports, Martinelli enjoys design, music, and watching reality TV.
She plays both the piano and the flute, and describes her personal music collection as very eclectic.

However, Country music is one genre you will never find on her iPod.
